No sooner had it revved sinisterly onto our Woodbridge, VA Kia dealer lot than one of our favorite new Kia sports cars had already received top honors for its powertrain from one of the foremost auto industry news and analysis authorities.

The under-hood growl was telltale: indeed, the new 2018 Kia Stinger made the 2018 Wards 10 Best Engines list for the capabilities of its workhorse 365-horsepower, 3.3-liter twin-turbo Lambda II V6. But no sport sedan engine can live by a firmly established, stellar Nurburgring Nordschleife-developed track record alone – even if that track was 480 laps and 6,214 miles total of hard acceleration, quick slows, sharp cornering, and almost 1,000 feet of elevation changes across 12.9 miles at a time. (It's true.)

To wit, the experts at WardsAuto evaluated it against more than 30 other powertrains in the segment, deciding that, with the engine's "exceptional power delivery, responsiveness, and refinement," the new 2018 Stinger had real "gran turismo credentials." Of course, the pulling power of 376 pound-feet of torque in the low 1,350 to 4,500 rpm range, a top speed of 167 mph, and the ability to go zero to 60 mph in as little as 4.7 seconds surely had much to do with it, too. These aren't to mention the boxes checked on the reviewer's evaluation for cutting-edge technology, low-noise operation, and fuel economy creds. On these counts, it seems no wonder WardsAuto saw 2018 Stinger a standout against competition from the likes of Audi, BMW, Infiniti, and Porsche.
